    Interplay of thermal and quantum spin fluctuations on the kagome lattice

    We present a Raman spectroscopic investigation of the Herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, the first realization of a Heisenberg s=1/2 antiferromagnet on a perfect kagome lattice. The magnetic excitation spectrum of this compound is dominated by two components, a high temperature quasi elastic signal and a low temperature, broad maximum. The latter has a linear low energy slope and extends to high energy. We have investigated the temperature dependence and symmetry properties of both signals. Our data agree with previous calculations and point to a spin liquid ground state.Comment: 5 figure

    Extracting the depolarization coefficient D_NN from data measured with a full acceptance detector

    The spin transfer from vertically polarized beam protons to Lambda or Sigma hyperons of the associated strangeness production pp -> pK Lambda (Sigma) is described with the depolarization coefficient D_NN. As the polarization of the hyperons is determined by their weak decays, detectors, which have a large acceptance for the decay particles, are needed. In this paper a formula is derived, which describes the depolarization coefficient D_NN by count rates of a 4 pi detector. It is shown, that formulas, which are given in publications for detectors with restricted acceptance, are specific cases of this formula for a 4 pi detector.Comment: Accepted for publication by Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section

    An empirically observed pitch-angle diffusion eigenmode in the Earth\u27s electron belt near L* = 5.0

    Abstract Using data from NASA\u27s Van Allen Probes, we have identified a synchronized exponential decay of electron flux in the outer zone, near L* = 5.0. Exponential decays strongly indicate the presence of a pure eigenmode of a diffusion operator acting in the synchronized dimension(s). The decay has a time scale of about 4 days with no dependence on pitch angle. While flux at nearby energies and L* is also decaying exponentially, the decay time varies in those dimensions. This suggests the primary decay mechanism is elastic pitch angle scattering, which itself depends on energy and L *. We invert the shape of the observed eigenmode to obtain an approximate shape of the pitch angle diffusion coefficient and show excellent agreement with diffusion by plasmaspheric hiss. Our results suggest that empirically derived eigenmodes provide a powerful diagnostic of the dynamic processes behind exponential decays

    Structure of 10N in 9C+p resonance scattering

    The structure of exotic nucleus 10N was studied using 9C+p resonance scattering. Two L=0 resonances were found to be the lowest states in 10N. The ground state of 10N is unbound with respect to proton decay by 2.2(2) or 1.9(2) MeV depending on the 2- or 1- spin-parity assignment, and the first excited state is unbound by 2.8(2) MeV.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, submitted to Phys.     Development of Off-the-shelf Stent Grafts for Juxtarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

    AbstractIntroductionThe use of EVAR for more complex aneurysm anatomy has become more widespread over the past decade. Fenestrated and branched stent grafts for the visceral and iliac segment show promising short- and midterm outcome and these procedures have become routine in many vascular centers. However, at present, such grafts are customized to the individual patient and planning and manufacturing leads to significant treatment delay subjecting the patients to the risk of rupture during the waiting period. The purpose of this report is to describe the first experience in treating juxta/suprarenal aneurysms using the first version of a new fenestrated stent graftMaterial and MethodsA fenestrated device was designed with two renal fenestrations, an SMA fenestration and a scallop for the coeliac artery. The renal arteries were designed with an inner 6 mm fenestration and an outer 15 mm diameter creating a dome to allow renal artery catheterization for a range of renal artery distribution. Seven patients with complex visceral artery anatomy were treated with customized stent grafts containing these pivot renal fenestrations.ResultsTechnical success was uniform with 100% target vessel catheterization and 0% 30-day mortality. In one case, the graft was displaced slightly during delivery resulting in a renal artery stent occlusion at 2 months postoperatively.ConclusionsThe development of a modified fenestrated device has shown this to be feasible and it has the potential to reduce the need for extensive preoperative graft customization and establishing a true off the shelf platform for juxta- and suprarenal AAA
